Sink, toilet or outside drain? Find the blockage
Where the water backs up tells you a lot about where the blockage is, and who you need.
- One sink or shower is slow, everything else is fine. The blockage is in that fitting's own trap or waste pipe: usually hair in a shower, grease and food in a kitchen sink.
- The toilet won't clear, or gurgles when you run a tap.The blockage may be further down, in the pipe the toilet and the other waste pipes share.
- Several things are slow at once, or the gully outside is overflowing. That points to the main drain from the house, and it usually needs rods or a jetting machine.
- Your neighbours have the same problem. It may be a shared drain or the public sewer. Uisce Éireann looks after public sewers; you can report a problem on water.ie.
Try this before you ring
- Clear the grate on any gully outside: leaves and silt block more drains than people expect.
- Use a plunger on a blocked sink or toilet. Cover the sink's overflow with a wet cloth so the push goes down the pipe.
- Pull hair out of the shower trap. It's often the whole problem.
- Don't mix drain chemicals, and don't use them if the water isn't moving at all: the plumber has to work in it.
- If sewage is coming up inside, stop using water in the house until it's cleared.
Drains in Limerick: old city, new suburbs
Limerick's housing runs from older houses around the Ennis Road and the North Circular to the suburban estates of Castletroy, Raheen and Dooradoyle. The drains vary just as much. In an older city house, the drain may be an old clay or cast iron pipe, which can crack or let roots in, and a blockage that keeps coming back is worth a camera survey before anyone digs. In a newer estate, the usual cause is what goes down the drain: fat, wipes and hair.
Two Limerick-specific points. Water rising in a flood isn't a blocked drain: King's Island flooded on 1 February 2014, and the council's flood relief scheme there is about tidal flooding, not household drains (Limerick City and County Council). And if several houses on the road are affected at once, it may be the public sewer, which is Uisce Éireann's: report it on water.ie.
What to tell the plumber
- Which sinks, toilets or showers are affected, and since when.
- Whether the gully or manhole outside is full.
- Whether the neighbours have the same problem.
- Anything that went down recently: wipes, fat, a toy, building waste.
Pick "Blocked sink, toilet or drain" in the form and say it in your own words in the message box.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to unblock a drain in Limerick?
Published prices to unblock a drain in normal hours run €80–€150, across 1 source. Out of hours, a call-out alone runs €100–€350. Ask for the price with VAT.
Is a blocked drain my job or Uisce Éireann's?
Generally, drains within your property boundary are the owner's to sort out, and the public sewer is Uisce Éireann's. If neighbours are affected too, it may be a shared drain or the sewer: check with Uisce Éireann on water.ie.
Can I use drain cleaner?
On a slow sink, it can help. On a drain that isn't moving at all, it usually doesn't, and it makes the job harder and less safe for whoever clears it. Never mix two products.
What's drain jetting, and when do I need it?
A high-pressure water jet that scours the inside of the drain. It's used when rods won't shift a blockage, or to clear built-up grease and silt. Published Limerick prices run €180–€350.
Why would I need a CCTV drain survey?
When a drain keeps blocking after it's cleared, a camera shows whether the pipe is cracked, sagging or full of roots, so you know what's needed before anyone digs. Published Limerick prices run €200–€400.
Do you cover Castletroy, Raheen and Dooradoyle?
Yes, and Caherdavin, Corbally and the Ennis Road. Put your area or Eircode in the form.
