Before you send it
What is the immersion telling you?
Three checks. They tell the plumber which part to bring.
- No light on the switchCheck the switch and the fuse board first. A tripped switch costs nothing to reset.
- Light on, water coldThe thermostat or the element has failed. A thermostat is €80–€160 on Limerick prices, an element €120–€250.
- Hot, but slow or rumblingScale on the element. At a median 250 mg/l, Limerick city water is at the edge of hard.
If the cylinder itself is weeping at a seam, it's a new cylinder, not a part.
Limerick homes
When the immersion matters most
58% of homes in Limerick city and suburbs heat with gas, 21% with oil and 15% with electricity (CSO Census 2022, CSO Census 2022, small area statistics). Where the boiler makes the hot water, the immersion is the backup, so it's the immersion you notice when the boiler goes. In the 21% of households living in a flat or apartment, an electric immersion is often the only hot water.
32% of the city's homes were built before 1971, so some cylinders sit on old pipework: ask the plumber to look at the cylinder's connections as well as the part.
Hard water: Uisce Éireann's 41 hardness results for the Limerick City Environs supply zone from 2022 to 2025 have a median of 250 mg/l of calcium carbonate, half of them between 242 and 260 (Uisce Éireann hardness results, 2022–2025). That's moderately hard on Meath County Council’s scale.

FAQ
Immersion questions
How much does it cost to replace an immersion element in Limerick?
€120–€250 including labour and VAT, on plumbersinireland.ie's Limerick guide (plumbersinireland.ie: immersion heaters in Limerick). A thermostat on its own is €80–€160. No Limerick plumber we found publishes its own rate card.
Why is there no hot water from my immersion?
Start with the switch: its light should come on. If it does and the tap stays cold, the thermostat or the element has usually gone. A timer set to the wrong hours, or a tripped switch on the fuse board, looks the same from the tap.
How much is a new immersion heater?
€200–€450 fitted, including VAT, on the same Limerick guide (plumbersinireland.ie: immersion heaters in Limerick). A leaking cylinder or immersion repair is €150–€400, labour included and parts extra, on Crowley Plumbing's Cork price list (Crowley Plumbing, Cork: emergency plumbing costs).
Is a dual immersion worth it?
It costs €300–€550 fitted in Limerick (plumbersinireland.ie: immersion heaters in Limerick). A dual immersion has a short element for a sink's worth of hot water and a long one for baths, so you heat only what you need.
Does Limerick's water wear out elements?
It scales them. The Limerick City Environs zone has a median of 250 mg/l of calcium carbonate over 2022 to 2025, moderately hard, at the edge of hard (Uisce Éireann hardness results, 2022–2025). Scale on an element makes it rumble, heat slowly and fail sooner.
